Join your guide, Yarrow Hinnant, Pratt Curator of Botanical Exhibits, in an exploration of local wild plants, with a focus on edible and medicinal uses for plants that you will find in your backyard, at the beach and high in the mountains. We will be focusing on some of the tastier edible plants and methods of preparing and storing them, both in the context of traditional uses and modern adaptations. We will get a bit deeper into plant identification, learning how to identify key plant families and make safe decisions in the field. In considering the medicinal uses of wild plants, we will focus on the applications for which traditional Sugpiaq and Dena’ina plantlore overlaps with uses in modern herbalism. We will talk about wild plant teas, first aid uses and more advanced preparation methods.
