We will offer an interpretive introduction to the broader\necology of the Kachemak Bay region and describe the ways that we\nincorporate the plant communities of the region into the Botanical Garden\nat the Pratt Museum. Botany experts and novices alike can find delightful\ninsights as we explore the interactions and dynamics of our local\necosystem. \nThe Homestead Garden is an ever-evolving exhibit featuring many\nclassic fruits and vegetables and a few specific local varieties that have\nbeen treasured by the local community for generations. We will explore\nsome of the basics of plant propagation\, discuss the benefits of perennial\nfood crops and talk about food preservation and storage. Snacking is\nencouraged! Throughout the season\, something is always worth sampling\nout of the garden\, though the real delight is black currant season in the\nlate autumn. \nThe Forest Trails showcase the ecological context in which the Pratt\nMuseum and Park is embedded. These trails wind through one of the\nlarger remaining wild spaces in downtown Homer\, and have some of the\nlargest remaining trees in the area. Wildlife is abundant and the plant\ncommunities are diverse. There are several loops of varying distance that\nwind through the nearly 10 acre forest. A meander through these woods\nwith one of our guides will offer an opportunity for wildlife sightings\,\nlistening to songbirds and discussing the ethnobotanical and historical\nuses of plants that live in our region.

The exhibit is entitled Universal Connections: Bringing Us Together and is a mix of photographs from around the world curated by Sarah Borgen. ​It is a collaborative exhibit showcasing artwork from local artists. \nMore on the theme of Universal Connections \n\nThroughout our lives\, we get caught in a whirlwind of concerns\, thoughts\, and anxieties only to briefly pierce the interpersonal veil and see ourselves in the eyes of others. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 27\, 6 – 7:30 pm \nCost: Sliding Scale – Donations Encouraged \nFeaturing Dr. Fred Sharpe of the Alaska Whale Foundation and Kenneth O’Brien of the Pratt Museum and Park. \nCoastal Alaska serves as feeding grounds for a population of 10\,000 humpback whales that breed in Hawaii during the winter. Did you know these amazing marine mammals are facing current and future ecological challenges? Dr. Sharpe and Mr. O’Brien have worked together for the past decade\, investigating the North Pacific population of humpback whales. \nJoin them as they discuss the biology and history of this population of whales. Including the cultural connections that the humpbacks embody as they travel back and forth across the wide ocean. They will share some of the findings of their work and discuss questions that are being explored regarding the current and future ecological challenges faced by these impressive marine mammals\, such as problems with plastic debris and warming seas that are increasing in acidity. Why should we care about salmon? \nSalmon Culture: Kachemak Bay Connections draws on a sampling of local artists whose work celebrates salmon from private collections and the Pratt’s archives. This exhibition is co-curated by two local daughters of salmon fishermen\, Carla Klinker Cope and Nadia Jackinsky-Sethi. \nSalmon Culture: Kachemak Bay Connections exhibition is funded through the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Homer Foundation and is currently on exhibit at the Pratt.

Together with a grant from the Economic Development Administration\, we have the opportunity to explore options to make ADA accessible improvements to portions of our trail system\, to create an outdoor education and community gathering space\, and to better connect our campus to Pioneer Avenue and Homer’s walkable downtown network. Everyone is welcome! \n\nGuided walks will begin at 12:15\, 4:15 and 5:30 pm with Pratt staff and landscape architect Peter Briggs of Corvus Design.\nOpen house-style charrette from 4:00 to 7:00 pm in our downstairs classroom gallery.\nPlease enter on the south side\, downstairs doors of the museum. DESCRIPTION:Pratt Museum and Park \nBotanical Garden\, Homestead Garden and Forest Trails Tours \nJune 1 – September 2 \nThursdays & Saturdays \n11:00 am & 4:00 pm \nFree & open to the public! \nJoin the Pratt Museum & Park Garden Crew for free\, guided tours of our Botanical Gardens\, Homestead Garden\, and Forest Trails. We will offer an interpretive introduction to the broader ecology of the Kachemak Bay region and discuss the ways that we incorporate the plant communities of the region into the Botanical Garden at the Pratt Museum. Botany experts and novices alike can find delightful insights as we explore the interactions and dynamics of our local ecosystem. \nThe Homestead Garden is an ever-evolving exhibit featuring many classic fruits and vegetables and a few specific local varieties that have been treasured by the local community for generations. We will explore some of the basics of plant propagation\, preservation and storage\, and the benefits of perennial food crops. Snacking is encouraged! Throughout the season\, something is always worth sampling out of the garden. A favorite delight is black currant season in the late autumn. \nThe Forest Trails showcase the ecological context in which the Pratt Museum and Park is embedded. These trails wind through one of the larger remaining wild spaces in downtown Homer\, and have some of the largest remaining trees in the area. Wildlife is abundant and the plant communities are diverse. There are several loops of varying distance that wind throughout the museum’s nearly 10-acre forested campus. \nYou’re invited to meander throughout the museum’s gardens and 10-acre forested campus with a guide from our garden crew for opportunities to view wildlife\, listening to songbirds\, and discuss the ethnobotanical and historical uses of plants that live in the Kachemak Bay region.
