DESCRIPTION:FIRST FRIDAY EXHIBITION – “CELEBRATING OUR SISTER CITY: 40 YEARS OF GIFTS FROM TESHIO\, JAPAN” \nFriday\, May 3\, 4-6pm\, FREE \n2024 marks the City of Homer’s 40th anniversary as a Sister City with Teshio\, Hokkaido\, Japan. Established April 7\, 1984\, Teshio and Homer have enjoyed a profound camaraderie and sharing of families\, student exchanges\, ideals\, and memorabilia. This exhibit provides an opportunity to learn more about our Sister City\, foster a stronger connection with Teshio\, and view these cherished pieces that are part of the City of Homer’s Municipal Art Collection. \nAs part of our communities 40-year celebration\, eighteen pieces of art that Teshio has generously gifted the City over the years will be on display in the Main Lobby of the Pratt Museum from May 1 to September 7. \nMore information can be found by reading our PRESS RELEASE.

Please send your child with the proper gear to be prepared for any weather!  Caregivers are not required to stay with children during workshop duration but may stay in a supervisory role if deemed necessary. Each painting is set in a forest of birch trees\, using light and shadow to allude to the adversities and resilience\, as well as the loneliness and triumph\, that comes from developing the whole self. \nPlease join us for a free Opening Exhibition beginning at 5pm on Friday\, May 17th. DESCRIPTION:NATURE JOURNALING FOR KIDS\, WITH KIM MCNETT \n$15 per child/$10 per Pratt Museum member | two workshops available: Thursday\, May 9 from 4-5:30pm OR Saturday\, May 18 from 1:30-3pm \nAward-winning naturalist\, artist\, teacher and wilderness guide\, Kim McNett\, teaches nature journaling and visual art to all ages. Nature journaling is a practice of creativity and curiosity that draws from our own experiences in the natural world. Learn beginner-friendly field sketching and recording techniques that will strengthen your observation and appreciation of the natural world. Workshop includes a blank journal and use of all needed supplies. \nThis workshop is outdoors and designed for independent learners ages 7-12. Please send your child with the proper gear to be prepared for any weather!  Caregivers are not required to stay with children during workshop duration but may stay in a supervisory role if deemed necessary. Botany experts and novices alike can find delightful insights as we explore the interactions and dynamics of our local ecosystem. \nThe Homestead Garden is an ever-evolving exhibit featuring many classic fruits and vegetables and a few specific local varieties that have been treasured by the local community for generations. We will explore some of the basics of plant propagation\, discuss the benefits of perennial food crops and talk about food preservation and storage. Snacking is encouraged! Throughout the season\, something is always worth sampling from the garden\, though the real delight is black currant season in late autumn. \nThe Forest Trails showcase the ecological context in which the Museum is embedded. These trails wind through one of the larger remaining wild spaces in downtown Homer\, and have some of the largest remaining trees in the area. Wildlife is abundant and the plant communities are diverse. There are several loops of varying distance that wind through the nearly 10 acre forest. A meander through these woods with one of our guides will offer an opportunity for wildlife sightings\, listening to songbirds\, and discussing the ethnobotanical and historical uses of plants that live in our region.
