SUMMARY:Plant Sale with the Homer Garden Club
DESCRIPTION:The Pratt Museum Botanical Garden crew is excited to partner with the Homer Garden Club for this year’s plant sale! \n\n\nAs part of our garden restoration project\, we will be thinning and propagating many different plants from the Pratt Museum gardens and grounds. All funds raised by this sale will support acquiring new plants for the garden\, particularly for covering water taxi costs for getting our crew across the Bay. \n\n\nWe will be offering up a profusion of wildflowers\, including forget-me-nots and Campanulas\, as well as homestead favorites such as Swedish Black Currants and local Homestead strawberries. We will also have some of the beloved Sitka Roses for sale\, which have brightened the museum entrance for many years. \n\nYou can find us adjacent to the Homer Garden Club Plant Sale\, in the Homer Chamber of Commerce parking lot on May 22\, with sales starting at 11am.

SUMMARY:Finding Home in Homer
DESCRIPTION:Finding Home in Homer is a new project hosted by the Pratt Museum for young people (ages 14-24) who have lived experience with homelessness\, housing insecurity/at risk\, couchsurfing\, unstable home environments\, or car camping\, or teens seeking emancipation due to parent relations. The goal of this project is to connect young people in the community with local artist mentors\, workshops\, and a group of peers to create art\, music\, and writing in response to the question “what is home?” \nWe hope this project provides a platform for young people in the community to share stories\, make connections\, and call Homer to action to work to end youth homelessness. Concluding this year’s program\, youth participating have the option of submitting their artwork for the Finding Home in Homer exhibit. See what they have created on Friday\, May 7th from 4 – 6 PM.  This exhibit will be open to the public in our community gallery throughout the summer.

DESCRIPTION:ZOOM | Facebook Live  \nFree  \nFriday\, November 20th 6 – 7:30 pm  \nAs one of four Alaskan artists represented in the exhibit Shifting Tides: Convergence in Cloth\, Cat Larrea will be presenting the process and techniques used in creating her piece\, “Tide Water Glacier.”  The presentation is aimed at anyone interested in working with fiber reactive dyes in general and learning about dye painting specifically.  Information on supplies\, resources and further education will be provided to participants.  \nYou can see Cat’s piece\, as well as the work for 44 other artists from around the Pacific coast in Shifting Tides: Convergence in Cloth\, on display at the Pratt Museum from October 9 – December 19.

SUMMARY:Circle & Curve Quilting Workshop: Make Your Own Waves!
DESCRIPTION:Quilters of Kachemak Bay and beyond! Join quilt artist Maria Shell in this two-day virtual workshop exploring curved-piecing techniques through the lens of the traveling exhibit Shifting Tides: Convergence in Cloth\, on display at the Pratt Museum Oct 9-Nov 28. This workshop will include a complete discussion of all the ways you can improvisation-ally PIECE circles and curves. While learning these new techniques\, students will also be given information about improvisational piecing techniques\, and ideas for taking these techniques and creating original quilts. During the class\, students create a collection of circle and curve quilt blocks–great for a sampler. \nDay 1: Saturday\, November 7th: 2:30 – 5:30 p.m. AKST  \nDay 2: Sunday\, November 8th: 2:30 – 5:30 p.m AKST \nClick here to purchase tickets  \nAbout the Instructor: Anchorage-based quilt artist Maria Shell’s work is firmly grounded in the tradition and craft of American quilt making. She utilizes both vintage and contemporary commercial solid and print cotton fabrics\, as well as hand-dyed cotton fabrics in her work. Maria’s quilts exhibit playful experiments with color\, shape\, and alignment. She is the recipient of numerous awards\, and her work has been featured in solo and group-shows around Alaska and the lower-48. An international organization that promotes the quilt as an art form\, SAQA has a history of inviting artists to explore topical\, sometimes controversial topics. With this latest show\, the organization’s west-coast members explore the earth’s largest ecosystem.
