SUMMARY:Waves & Ripples: A Community Story Circle
DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted by the Pratt Museum and Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies\, this is a Zoom-based story circle. \nWaves & Ripples: A Community Story Circle About Our Changing Ecosystems \nOur surroundings in Kachemak Bay are subject to near-constant change; each day the landscape of our beaches changes with the tide\, and each year our days become darker and then light again. In this environment of continual change\, how do we recognize the patterns of longer-term shifts to our local ecology? \nThe Pratt Museum and Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies invite you to join us for an evening of community story sharing about the changes we’ve noticed in our local ecology. \nThroughout our time together\, you will be able to share your stories about local ecological changes\, listen to the stories of others\, and make connections with strangers and acquaintances alike. \nThis is all about connecting and learning\, not performing! You do NOT need to be an experienced storyteller to participate. No preparation is necessary\, and you have the option to share or simply listen to others. \nAll ages are welcome to join\, register via Eventbrite to RSVP. \nThe Zoom link to join the event as well as prompts to consider will be sent via e-mail to everyone who registers.

During the class\, students create a collection of circle and curve quilt blocks–great for a sampler. \nDay 1: Saturday\, November 7th: 2:30 – 5:30 p.m. AKST \nDay 2: Sunday\, November 8th: 2:30 – 5:30 p.m AKST \nClick here to purchase tickets  \nAbout the Instructor: Anchorage-based quilt artist Maria Shell’s work is firmly grounded in the tradition and craft of American quilt making. She utilizes both vintage and contemporary commercial solid and print cotton fabrics\, as well as hand-dyed cotton fabrics in her work. Maria’s quilts exhibit playful experiments with color\, shape\, and alignment. She is the recipient of numerous awards\, and her work has been featured in solo and group-shows around Alaska and the lower-48. To see examples of her work\, visit her website mariashell.com \nAbout the Exhibit: Created as a group exhibit to shine a light on the issues facing the Pacific Ocean today\, Shifting Tides is a collection of work by 45 artists chosen from the seven Pacific-facing regions of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). An international organization that promotes the quilt as an art form\, SAQA has a history of inviting artists to explore topical\, sometimes controversial topics. With this latest show\, the organization’s west-coast members explore the earth’s largest ecosystem.

SUMMARY:Night of Entanglement
DESCRIPTION:What might be some of the consequences of widely sharing new ecological discoveries in the present day? How does the practice of naming places and species after European naturalists reflect the values of Western culture? How can we expand our ideas of collecting to be more environmentally sustainable? Join the Pratt Museum on Friday\, Sept. 4th for a Facebook Live Event\, as we take a deep dive into some of the questions and themes explored in our latest exhibit\, Entangled: Exploring Natural History Collections from Kachemak Bay. We are thrilled to be joined by the authors Marilyn Sigman and Nancy Lord for this event\, who will be reading excerpts from their books and leading us in a discussion around how natural history collections exist at the intersections of science\, stories and art. \nWe hope to see you (virtually) there!
