SUMMARY:March First Friday with the City of Homer
DESCRIPTION:Join the City of Homer Planning Team at the Pratt Museum & Park to see the collection of conceptual drawings by Stantec for the proposed new multi-purpose community center to be located at the current HERC site at Pioneer Avenue and Sterling Highway. This visual feast of ideas is a multi-panel exhibit of architectural designs and plans. The exterior drawing features outdoor concepts to encompass current recreation uses and the flow of activities. The indoor floor plans have a modern feel and bring the community’s ideas to life for the potential use of the building. \nThese conceptual drawings are a direct result of the public survey the City conducted in January to determine the desires and needs of the community for a new center. Be first to see these exciting conceptual drawings\, talk with City representatives and leave your feedback. \nIn addition to the first Friday\, there will be a session called “Drop-In With Parks and Recreation” on Thursday 10th\, from 2-4 pm. Parks and Community Recreation staff will be present as well as invited outdoor groups to talk about the HERC grounds under the proposed revitalization plan. \nOn Saturday\, March 12\, also 2-4\, there will be a general drop-in time for answering questions.

SUMMARY:2021 Pratt Museum Quilt Raffle: A Stunningly Beautiful Celebration of Homer's Creative Spirit and Natural History
DESCRIPTION:For over 40 years\, the Kachemak Bay Quilters have produced handmade quilts for the Pratt Museum\, drawing on the artistic strength of local quilters and maintaining a vital community tradition. Each year the quilters pick a theme that celebrates the region’s natural history\, history\, and each other\, creating one special quilt to be raffled in support of the museum’s operations. Using the simplest of tools – a needle and thread in hand\, and beautiful fabric – together they create a stunningly beautiful legacy of Homer’s creative spirit. Many of these quilts have become part of the museum’s permanent collection.  This year for the first time\, two quilts are included in the raffle. One is themed around Alaska’s Nothern Lights and the second is themed around Alaska’s Wildlife. Tickets are $5 each or $20 for five. All proceeds benefit the Pratt Museum\, kindness of the Kachemak Bay Quilters. \nJoin us at the Pratt on Friday\, December 3rd from 4-5 pm for an Afternoon Tea and Quilt Raffle Drawing Event.  You do not need to be present to win. \n

SUMMARY:"Cold Mountain Path" Book Launch with Homer Author Tom Kizzia
DESCRIPTION:Please Join Us for the Cold Mountain Path Book Launch with Author Tom Kizzia Friday\, November 5th\, 2021 @ 7 pm. \nHomer author Tom Kizzia’s new book is a history of the ghost town decades in McCarthy\, Alaska. Cold Mountain Path revisits the iconic story-rich landscape of his national bestseller\, Pilgrim’s Wilderness. The story begins with the last copper train leaving the Wrangell Mountains during the Great Depression\, and runs through the creation of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in the 1980s\, including a full account of the 1983 mass shooting that brought the ghost town period to an end. \nTom will read from his new book and answer questions at this book launch\, so come join us\, or tune in for the event via Zoom. The Homer Bookstore will have copies of Cold Mountain Path for signing afterward. Light refreshments from Red Bird Kitchen will be provided. \nSpace is limited for this event.  Masks\, please. RSVP to reserve a seat or to receive the zoom link by contacting: hatkins@prattmuseum.org or call 907.435.3335. RSVPs will open on 10.6.21. \nTom Kizzia\, 10 August 2012\, near Homer\, Alaska \nTom Kizzia first moved to Homer in 1975\, fresh out of college\, to become editor of the Homer Weekly News. After a spell working for the Anchorage Daily News in Anchorage\, he returned to Homer in 1989 to raise a family in his cabin near McNeil Canyon. As the “Homer bureau” for the Daily News\, he traveled all over Alaska covering stories for the next 20 years. \nTom’s first book\, The Wake of the Unseen Object\, emerged from his visits to remote Alaska Native communities during a time of great transition. His second\, Pilgrim’s Wilderness\, a non-fiction account of a troubled family in the Wrangell Mountains\, was a national bestseller and later named Alaska’s best true crime book by the New York Times Book Review. Tom was named Artist of the Year in 2013 by the Homer Council of the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Homer Drawdown: Peatland Project is a community-wide collaboration to protect and restore peatlands. Peatlands are special wetlands that store a lot of carbon and play critical roles in our local ecosystems\, cultures\, and economies.  \nThe Pratt Museum & Park is delighted to collaborate with Homer Drawdown and Bunnell Street Arts Center to present art programs that elevate the importance of peatlands for planetary sustainability. Art for Peat includes a residency\, an exhibit\, and a mural opportunity. ‍ \nArt for Peat Artist in Residence 2021: Artist in Residence Sheryl Maree Reily will spend two weeks in mid-June and mid-September exploring\, documenting\, and interpreting peatlands in the Homer area through photographic research and documentation\, interviews\, and community engagement. More information about Sheryl’s residency. ‍ \nArt for Peat at the Pratt Museum & Park is an exhibition for art highlighting the importance of Art for Peat. The exhibition will be from September 10th until October 10th  in the museum’s lower level. SUMMARY:Finding Home in Homer Community Events
DESCRIPTION:Community Conversation\, Friday\, August 13th\, 12 – 1:30 PM\n\nThe Pratt Museum & Park\, in partnership with South Peninsula Behavioral Health\, will host a community conversation around youth housing insecurity on the Peninsula. The discussion will center on the exhibit “Finding Home in Homer” on display through August 31 in the museum’s community gallery.\n\nFinding Home in Homer is a year-long project that invited youth who have experienced homelessness or housing insecurity in Homer to explore their stories and express themselves through different artistic mediums\, with the support of artist mentors\, community mentors\, and their peers. We will explore how the program was shaped by COVID 19 and reflect on what we learned in the process. This discussion is open to the public and will be made accessible on Zoom.   RSVP via Eventbrite or email hatkins@prattmuseum.org.  Once you RSVP\, you will receive the zoom link closer to the date.\n\n\nLive Music and Artist Celebration\, Saturday\, August 14th\, 4 – 6 PM \n\nMusic performances by Courtney Rose\, Little Foot\, and special guests.\n\nCourtney is the Bristol Bay Lead for the Youth Alaska Action Board on Housing and Homelessness (YAABHH)\, creator of the Blue Eyed Native project\, and lead singer of Murmur.\nFoot is the Statewide Lead for YAABHH\, founder of Houseless Records\, and member of the Continuum of Care Board for the Balance of State. Both of these artists/ activists/ musicians will perform their original music.\n\nCourtney and Foot will offer a tour of the current exhibit\, Finding Home in Homer\, located in the Community Room at the Pratt Museum.\n\n\n*Due to COVID-19 safety protocols\, this event will have limited attendance.
