SUMMARY:Last of the Season! Guided Garden Tour at the Pratt Museum Botanical Garden
DESCRIPTION:BOTANICAL GARDEN\, HOMESTEAD GARDEN\, AND FOREST TRAIL TOURS \nFREE // May 30 – August 30 // Thursdays and Saturdays \, 11am – Noon \nJoin the Pratt Museum Garden Crew for guided tours of the Botanical Gardens\, Homestead Garden\, and Forest Trails. \nWe will offer an interpretive introduction to the broader ecology of the Kachemak Bay region and describe the ways that we incorporate the plant communities of the region into the Botanical Garden at the Museum. Botany experts and novices alike can find delightful insights as we explore the interactions and dynamics of our local ecosystem. \nThe Homestead Garden is an ever-evolving exhibit featuring many classic fruits and vegetables and a few specific local varieties that have been treasured by the local community for generations. We will explore some of the basics of plant propagation\, discuss the benefits of perennial food crops and talk about food preservation and storage. Snacking is encouraged! Throughout the season\, something is always worth sampling from the garden\, though the real delight is black currant season in late autumn. \nThe Forest Trails showcase the ecological context in which the Museum is embedded. These trails wind through one of the larger remaining wild spaces in downtown Homer\, and have some of the largest remaining trees in the area. Wildlife is abundant and the plant communities are diverse. There are several loops of varying distance that wind through the nearly 10 acre forest. A meander through these woods with one of our guides will offer an opportunity for wildlife sightings\, listening to songbirds\, and discussing the ethnobotanical and historical uses of plants that live in our region.

SUMMARY:Guided Garden Tour at the Pratt Museum Botanical Garden

SUMMARY:"Two for the Trails" Volunteer Trail Workday
DESCRIPTION:Two for the Trails Volunteer Trail Workday \nTuesday\, August 4 & Wednesday\, August 5 | 10am – 4pm \nCalling all volunteers! Join us at the Pratt on Tuesday and Wednesday to help refresh our accessible trail loop. Curator of Botanical Exhibits\, Yarrow Hinnant\, will direct the resurfacing project\, throwing in some professional trail maintenance tips throughout the day. Volunteers will mainly be helping with transporting and raking gravel along the half-mile loop. Refreshments provided! \nVolunteer shifts are from 10am – 1pm and 1pm – 4pm. If you can’t commit to the full shift\, that’s fine! We ask that you show up at the beginning of the shift when instructions will be given\, then leave early if needed. Please sign up using the form below. \nThis project wouldn’t be possible without the support of Homer-Kachemak Bay Rotary Club\, whose members will be there both days as dedicated trail work volunteers and the generous financial support of Athletic Brewing Co. via their Two for the Trails grant initiative\, which funds projects that improve access to outdoor areas. \nAbout Two for the Trails: Two For The Trails donates up to $2MM annually to expand outdoor access via trails and parks while improving the environment through sustainable\, low-impact practices whenever possible. This includes investing in projects that replace invasive plant species with native ones\, prioritizing projects that don’t use fuel-based machinery\, avoiding non-biodegradable materials\, and protecting endemic animals wherever possible. The program also funds projects like waterway cleanups and disaster debris removal as needed by the community. Our focus is on balancing human use with environmental care\, giving priority to projects that are not just sustainable but regenerative—leaving the land better than it was found. \n
