A lifelong teller of transformative truths\, she weaves ancestral wisdom\, activism\, and artistry into stories that heal\, awaken\, and liberate. With a B.A. in Communications/Storytelling earned summa cum laude\, Gogo is a force of courage\, compassion\, and cultural celebration. \nThis event is in collaboration with Homer Pride.  \nAdmission is free\, with a suggested donation of $5.  \nAfter attending our event\, be sure to head over to the Homer Public Library for their Juneteenth Celebration Presentation from 6-7pm!

DESCRIPTION:JUNIOR CURATOR CAMP \nWednesday\, June 11 – Friday\, June 13 | 12:00 – 4:00 PM \nAges 9 – 11 \n$120 per child/$100 museum member\, sibling discount available ($100 for each additional sibling) \nCome be a Junior Curator at the Pratt Museum! Your child will join our staff in curating a science micro-exhibit. Campers will team up in small groups to choose an item from the education collection\, learn the basics of research\, and design their own exhibit panel to be presented to friends and family.  \nA Junior Curator Camp graduation ceremony will occur Friday from 4 – 4:15pm. Campers can lead their family members on a tour of the entire Museum directly following the ceremony with no additional admission cost\, the Museum will remain open until 6pm. \nAll materials and supplies provided. Remember to pack a snack to enjoy outside! No peanuts\, please.  \nCampers must come prepared each day for outdoor exploration on our Forest Ecology Trails regardless of weather.  \nPre-registration required.

Note that the business meeting will include reports from all the different societies and about borough-wide activities. Owl! Swan!) from the Pratt collections and share stories about bones that were found at the Point West archaeological dig site.  This event is free\, however donations are always appreciated! Every dollar contributed supports our ability to offer exciting educational programs like this at low or no cost to our community. \n  \nLee Post is a nationally recognized bone articulation expert with more than thirty years of experience. He is one of the world’s leading authorities on salvaging\, preparing\, and articulating beached whales\, a story that began when the Pratt Museum acquired a 17-foot beaked whale that washed up on the shores of Kachemak Bay in 1977. This led to fifteen years of building up the osteology collection at the Museum\, followed by decades of collaborations with schools and students. Post has also created a variety of written manuals that are some of the only of their kind in the world. DESCRIPTION:First Friday: Bering Sea Storms: Past to Present Exhibit Introduction with Arctic Coastal Geoscience Lab Director Chris Maio\nFriday\, April 4 | free admission to all galleries from 4-6pm | lecture begins at 5pm\, suggested donation of $5\nJoin us in the Main Gallery at the Pratt Museum for this introductory presentation\, which will focus on the 2022 research cruise aboard the R/V Sikuliaq featured within the museum exhibit. \n Arctic Coastal Geoscience Lab Director Chris Maio and UAF Geophysical Institute PhD student Reyce Bogardus will discuss the research methods and activities\, life aboard the ship\, and inclusion of Indigenous partners from the Qawalangin Tribe of Unalaska.  The Aleutians Change video will be shown and an open discussion held.  \nThrough the presentation\, the audience will gain a better understanding of how exciting and fruitful ship-based research is and how the partnerships created in the project have led to numerous broader outcomes and impacts.\n  \nABOUT CHRIS MAIO Chris has over 15 years of experience investigating coastal hazards and their impacts on people and the environment.  He is an Associate Professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and serves as the director of both the Arctic Coastal Geoscience Lab and the Alaska Coastal Cooperative.  His current research integrates coastal hazard assessments with local and Indigenous knowledge to understand and educate about how a warming climate is impacting rural coastal communities.  Chris is also leading the newly funded Navigating the New Arctic ACTION project. DESCRIPTION:The Bear’s Dilemma: A Lecture by Dr. Bretwood Higman \nFriday\, February 28 | 5pm | Free\, suggested donation of $5 \nThe Bear’s Dilemma: Can society use science to prepare for climate disasters? \nClimate change in Alaska is exacerbating natural hazards like wildfire\, coastal erosion\, flooding\, and landslides. Hig (Bretwood Higman) has been studying large landslides in areas of Alaska where glacial retreat and permafrost thaw are destabilizing mountain slopes. As Alaska warms\, landslides like this could generate devastating tsunamis or sever economically critical roads\, railways\, and pipelines. Scientific efforts are largely focused on gaps in our understanding: How can we detect signs that a slowly creeping slope is about to fail? How does permafrost contribute to the strength of mountains? However\, what we do in order to use the things scientists learn is just as important as the science itself. A generation from now\, will hindsight show we figured it out? \nDr. Bretwood ‘Hig’ Higman is a geologist who lives in Seldovia\, and has spent his career studying tsunamis\, earthquakes\, and landslides. He received his PhD in geology from the University of Washington\, Seattle\, and is currently focused on studying landslides linked to climate change\, including some that could generate dangerous tsunamis. He also helps organize Arctic T-SLIP\, a group of scientists and community members seeking to mitigate the impacts of landslides resulting from climate change. The goal of the project was to help communities plan for future storm scenarios that may result from rapid climate change. Bering Sea Storms: Past to Present highlights the research collected and the way that scientists and Indigenous Alaskans worked together. DESCRIPTION:Homesteads & History for Kids – A Joint Program with Homer Public Library \nFriday\, January 17 | 1:30 – 2:30pm | FREE\, registration required \nCome to the Pratt and learn about local homesteads and homesteaders!\nJoin Youth Librarian Cinda and Maghan\, Curator of Education & Public Programs from the Pratt Musuem. \nRegistration required – register at the Homer Public Library website\, HERE. This event is intended for elementary aged kids. \nThis program is part of a series of collaborations between the Homer Public Library and the Pratt Museum.
