DESCRIPTION:BOTANICAL GARDEN\, HOMESTEAD GARDEN\, AND FOREST TRAIL TOURS \nFREE // May 30 – August 30 // Thursdays and Saturdays \, 11am – Noon \nJoin the Pratt Museum Garden Crew for guided tours of the Botanical Gardens\, Homestead Garden\, and Forest Trails. \nWe will offer an interpretive introduction to the broader ecology of the Kachemak Bay region and describe the ways that we incorporate the plant communities of the region into the Botanical Garden at the Museum. Botany experts and novices alike can find delightful insights as we explore the interactions and dynamics of our local ecosystem. \nThe Homestead Garden is an ever-evolving exhibit featuring many classic fruits and vegetables and a few specific local varieties that have been treasured by the local community for generations. We will explore some of the basics of plant propagation\, discuss the benefits of perennial food crops and talk about food preservation and storage. Snacking is encouraged! Throughout the season\, something is always worth sampling from the garden\, though the real delight is black currant season in late autumn. \nThe Forest Trails showcase the ecological context in which the Museum is embedded. These trails wind through one of the larger remaining wild spaces in downtown Homer\, and have some of the largest remaining trees in the area. Wildlife is abundant and the plant communities are diverse. There are several loops of varying distance that wind through the nearly 10 acre forest. A meander through these woods with one of our guides will offer an opportunity for wildlife sightings\, listening to songbirds\, and discussing the ethnobotanical and historical uses of plants that live in our region.

DESCRIPTION:THE SCIENCE & SPIRIT OF THE FOREST\n\n\n\n$20 per adult/$15 members of the Pratt\n\n\n\nFriday\, July 25th | 11am to noon\n\n\n\nA one-hour walk through the Pratt trails that weaves the ‘who’ and the ‘what’ of the natural world. How do both science and spirit help us understand and appreciate nature? Take a walk with guides Elizabeth Pileckas (Cosmic Hamlet Hikes) and one of our staff naturalists in an exploration of both the sense of spirit and the botanist’s knowing of this local forest. We will combine expert local area knowledge with mindful walking\, poetry and play.

DESCRIPTION:Science\, Art\, and Culture Day Camp at the PRATT \nWednesday\, July 23 – Friday\, Jul 25 | noon – 4pm \nSpend three afternoons learning about the Science\, Art\, and Culture of the Kachemak Bay region!  \nWhat makes the place we live in so unique? Join us for a Day Camp that combines the knowledge of four Homer organizations – Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (KBNERR)\, Homer Council on the Arts (HCOA)\, Seldovia Village Tribe (SVT)\, and us here at the Pratt Museum.  \nYour child will join our Education & Public Programs Manager as well as our other Educators from the collaborating organizations each day for this three-day program. Campers will focus on each of the themes (Science\, Art\, & Culture) for a day. Kids will explore the beach\, make art\, and learn about traditional ways of processing and preparing kelp and bidarki. \nAll materials and supplies provided. Campers must come prepared each day for outdoor play and exploration regardless of weather. Pre-registration is required online with the form below.

DESCRIPTION:THE GRACE OF DITUSHI: A BOTANY & SYMBOLOGY ART WORKSHOP \nFriday\, July 18 | 2-4PM \n$30 for non-members/$25 for Pratt Museum members \nLocal tribal artist and Nichił cultural expert Argent Kvasnikoff will be hosting a talk on the contemporary view of the lower peninsula’s ethnobotany and its relationship with indigenous culture. This discussion will explore the linguistic influences of wild plant cultivation and stewardship on local heritage and identity. Alongside the Pratt’s Head Gardener\, Shawn Jackinsky\, he will be guiding guests through an interpretive activity themed by local plantlore and a group discussion on examining the legacies from the earliest peoples to today using the language of flora. Guests are encouraged to wear fireweed colors\, pink and purple!

DESCRIPTION:JENNY BAKER LIVE AT THE PRATT \n  \nFriday July 11th | 5:30-7pm \nA Free Event \n  \nJoin us in celebrating our special exhibition\, Connected\, with Live Music featuring songs written and performed by singer/songwriter Jenny Baker. \nJenny Baker was raised on alfalfa bluegrass and lava rock in Bend\, Oregon. Her love of music was fed early by Tori Amos\, Ani DiFranco\, Patty Griffin\, Siouxsie and the Banshees\, many lengths of hair metal (as it receded)\, along with alternative\, and opera. Choir robes and playing festivals with The Colored Pencils in the late 90s only fueled the fire. She released her first album in 2003\, was voted Bend’s Best Musician in 2004\, and released a full-band 5 song EP in 2005. Since she moved to Alaska in 2005\, she has played at the Fireweed Festival\, Trapper Creek Bluegrass\, Anchorage Folk Festival\, Salmon Stock\, and small venue concerts.

Led by Homer’s own award-winning\, internationally known basket artist and story weaver\, Mavis Muller. Mavis will instruct & collaborate with each student to create a unique\, one-of-a-kind woven vessel using locally gathered natural materials such as: alder\, wild grass\, and nettle. \nMaterials are provided. Mavis will share unique natural embellishments from her personal collection. \nThis workshop is outdoors and designed for adults\, older teens are welcome too! Please come prepared for any weather and remember to print the waiver/release form and bring a completed copy to the workshop (we will have additional copies available on the day of the event). \nOnline registration is required for this event.
