Kinship with the sea translates as food, as freedom, as
a place to both test oneself and find inner peace. It is
a source of work that brings a family and a community together.
People who depend upon Kachemak Bay's waters - from Homer,
Halibut Cove, Seldovia, Port Graham, and Nanwalek - come
together to express what Kachemak Bay has given them and
what they hope to give back to Kachemak Bay.
About Community-Based Videos
Each of us has our own way of knowing, of interacting
with the world. The small personal voice carries truth
in its intimacy. These stories are the ones that captivate
us.
The Pratt Museum has brought together storytellers to
create community-based videos in their personal and communal
voice. Each video has been produced collaboratively from
start to finish by the storytellers. With this has come
an awakened sense of community born from listening to
each other and to the choir of many perspectives.
Credits
This community-based video was created at the Pratt Museum
in Homer, Alaska, on January 21-23, 1999. It was produced
and directed collaboratively by residents of the Kachemak
Bay and Lower Cook Inlet communities of Nanwalek, Port
Graham, Seldovia, Halibut Cove, Homer, and Ninilchik.
Oral history interviews in Sugpiaq/Alutiiq villages were
recorded in the summer of 1998. Historic and contemporary
images were collected by the Pratt Museum. Narration in
Alutiiq/Sugtestun and English was created by beach gatherers
and fishermen in the audience during the video production
process.
