1895 view of Augustine
C.W. Purington #50, U.S. Geological Survey

On The Horizon

George Becker and Charles Purington, with the U.S. Geological Survey, visited Augustine Island twelve years after the violent eruption of 1883. They scrambled up the steep sides to peer into the smoking, steaming crater. On approaching Augustine Island by boat in 1895, Becker noted that

… the mountain was still emitting steam in varying quantities. At a distance of a few miles the steam was sometimes scarcely visible, while at one time it ascended to fully twice the height of the mountain above the summit.
