On The Edge

During the two hours which I spent in watching on the outer edge of the crater, it was estimated that not more than 30 consecutive seconds elapsed during which masses of rock were not clattering down that portion of the inner cone which was in sight from my station. Though relatively small, these pieces of rock were often many tons in weight.
