This region is pummeled by fierce Gulf of Alaska
storms and ice-cold drafts of northern air,
driven by the Aleutian low-pressure system that
packs wind and precipitation.
Caught in this crossfire, it's a wonder Kachemak
Bay has a benevolent reputation as the Banana
Belt of Alaska. Though the weather swirls, the
steady temperatures of the massive Pacific Ocean
buffer air temperatures. Along the south shore,
the peaks of the Kenai Mountains snag clouds,
rain and snow, protecting Kachemak Bay from
the worst of this weather. In Homer, the mean
temperature differs only 30° F between winter
and summer.
