High-energy storm waves crash on the Homer Spit

Dynamic Spit

The outer beach is a high-energy environment. Daily tides and currents pound the shore, eroding gravel and sand into even smaller particles. Little wildlife survives. The inner beach is a low-energy environment where sediments accumulate, a home to beach plants and intertidal life. Sturdy as the Spit may be, the inner beach is easily damaged by vehicles and removal of driftwood.
