What Shifted?

At 5:36 PM, the earth exploded. With a force equal to 250 million tons of TNT, more than 100,000 square miles of the earth's surface heaved upward or dropped downward on either side of a fault plane.

In Kachemak Bay, five earth-altering minutes changed the economic destiny of two communities forever. Seldovia sank. Most waterfront canneries were demolished by "urban removal" as one resident remarked. Though many canneries promised to re-build, most closed or moved away. Pre-quake, Seldovia was the center of commercial fishing in Kachemak Bay. Post-quake, Homer became the center of commerce.
