Guided Student & Group Tours

A diversity of tours is available here at the Pratt Museum! Our Education staff and museum docents can lead your students or lifelong learner groups on a guided tour of the museum indoor and/or outdoor exhibits, and focus on specific exhibit-based topics of your choice.

Marine Gallery
Explore the Museum's aquaria containing live specimens from Kachemak Bay. Learn about the water birds and seabirds of Kachemak Bay, supplemented with exhibit materials. In the summer, a live remote wildlife viewing camera provides another teaching tool.

Spruce Bark BeetleForest Ecology Trail
Outdoor trail hike, weather permitting.
Learn about forest dynamics and change, and hike on an easy trail located on the Museum grounds.

Alaska Native Plants
Outdoor, early Fall, late Spring and Summer only
Identify and learn about the native plants in the Kachemak Bay region.

Making traditional hunter hats and viewing the bear exhibitStewardship
Learn about bears, bark beetles, and the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and examine the ways in which humans can be both caring and destructive forces.

Geography of Kachemak Bay
Explore the dynamic forces that shape our place: glaciers, volcanoes and tides.

Geology of Kachemak Bay
“What are the Dynamic Forces that Shape this Place” explores the formation of the Bay and land in relation to the glaciers, volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, flooding and plate tectonics through stories, images and interviews with scientists. Process orientation.

Mammal Skulls from Kachemak Bay Region
Learn about the land and marine mammals in our region by exploring the many specimens in the Museum.

Fish & Fishing
Learn about the biology of salmon, halibut, and other fish and explore the ways in which fishermen of the region catch them. Additional option: View the short film “The Lore of Fishing and Marine Harvesting.”

Crab drawingThe Sea & Our Interaction - Marine Safety
Experience the “Storm Warnings” exhibit which contains examples of marine safety equipment, oral history recordings of mariners who were nearly lost at sea, and survival suits to try on.

Winter Adaptations
Examine topics and exhibits that relate to how people and animals have adapted to winter life in the Kachemak Bay region.

Mining History
Learn about coal and gold mining adventures in the area through “Boom and Bust” stories and images.

Anchor Point cabinEarly Homer History & Homesteading
Listen to the stories of early area pioneer women, examine artifacts from early homesteads, and visit the 1935-36 vintage Homestead Cabin. Additional option: View the short film “ The Rich and Simple Life.”

Video Theater
View three short films produced here at the Pratt Museum: “The Lore of Fishing and Marine Harvesting,” “The Hunter and the Hunted: A Contemporary Seal Hunt,” and “The Rich and Simple Life.”

The KBEEA website www.homerfieldtrips.com has all the information educators need to help make the most out of a trip to Homer.
