The Pratt Museum collects significant works of art in all media by primarily local and Alaska artists. The art acquisition program is a balance of theme-driven and artist-driven selections. Themes emphasize community interests and museum programmatic initiatives, particularly as they relate to Kachemak Bay people and place - the unifying theme in museum exhibitry and programs. Selections of particular artist's work reflect the history and diversity of art in the community, offer local artists a sense of vision and place, and connect with the broader art community.

Funds for purchase of artworks are made possible by donations from art patrons and the Rasmuson Foundation Art Acquisition Initiative. The Art Acquisition Initiative, administered by Museums Alaska since 2003, supports the purchase of contemporary works by Alaskan artists.

Acquisitions are selected by the Art Acquisition Committee of local artists, community members, and staff. All acquisitions are recommended to the Pratt Museum Collections Committee for final approval.
